Week 6- Can't a Guy Get a Little Privacy?

You may think that you have all of your personal information on lock down, but think again. This week in HON 1515, the primary topic was privacy on the internet and how technology in the past few decades has developed many methods to track what you do and where you go nearly every second of the day. Blown to Bits chooses to compare this to the "Big Brother" ideal of Orwell's 1984, and I can certainly see the resemblances. The truly scary thing is that many of us even acknowledge that our private information is accessible to outside forces, yet we don't really seem to know how to prevent it. How can we? What can we do to protect our privacy besides set our social networking sites to "private?" That still doesn't help prevent hackers and tech-savvy stalkers from invading just about anything they want. Some people even like the fact that they're exposed for the world to see. Not me. The only comfort I have right now is a result of the assignment we did for Thursday, which involved us "digging up information" on a fellow classmate. I learned that having a common name like Nicholas Lee adds at least somewhat to the difficulty of finding my personal information. I guess I'll have to go with that for now. Overall, it was a pretty insightful--albeit creepy--week. Hasta luego!
