Week 7- Freud's Internet

Social networking is a very fascinating world with many, many possibilities. With Tuesday being devoted to 4chan, and Thursday being devoted to Facebook, this week was an interesting look into how we as a society can, and do, share information with others. Sites like Facebook and Twitter seem pretty familiar until you start using terms like "radical opacity" and "radical transparency" to describe a site's goals-- 4chan being a place of anonymity, Facebook being the opposite. What I found most interesting was when one of the articles we read earlier this week spoke of social networking sites in terms of Freud's id, ego, and superego. Essentially, one can see 4chan as the id (the internet's center for drives and satisfaction), Google as the ego (the center for thoughts and judgements), and Facebook as the superego (the voice of conscious that balances the other two). I had never thought of these sites in such a psychological way, but I can see it making sense. It just goes to show the amount of depth within the world wide web-- and this is just the beginning! Until next week, peace~
